Sport & Mental Health

What is the purpose of this study?

UG student Dewi Bowden from the University of Birmingham is undertaking a research project on sport and mental health in young adults. The study seeks to examine young adult’s experiences of sport and its effects on their mental health and wellbeing. We write to invite you to be a research participant in this study.

 

What will I be asked to do?

Dewi will ask you to complete a short questionnaire, able to be completed online. You will need approximately 15 minutes to complete the questionnaire. Some questions may be of sensitive nature and you do not have to answer any question you find upsetting or distressing. In the event that you wish to seek advice and/or information as a result of completing the questionnaires, here are some recommended sources: a) your GP, b) the Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust on 0121 301 0000, website: www.bsmhft.nhs.uk

Once I take part, can I change my mind?

Yes. After you have read this information and asked any questions you may have, please complete the online questionnaire. By doing so, you give your informed consent to participate in the study. We will ask you to provide a code at the start, so we are able to retrieve your responses in the future, should you wish to withdraw from the study. If at any time, before, during or after the start of the data collection, you wish to withdraw from the study, please just contact the supervisor on the contact details outlined below. You can withdraw for any reason and you will not be asked to explain your reasons for withdrawing. Please be advised that withdrawal of data will no longer be possible two weeks following completion of both interviews.

 

Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?

All procedures have been approved by the process of ethics approval at the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences. All data will be held confidentially in accordance with the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR). Data will only be viewed and accessed by the UG student and the project supervisor. At no point will the information you provide be shared in a way that would allow you to be personally identified. Any published material will be anonymised.

 

What will happen to the results of the study?

The results of the study will be reported in the students’ dissertations, a copy of this will be available for the school upon request by May 2022. Results might also be presented in national/international conferences or reported in academic journals or books. As previously noted, all names used for these purposes will be anonymous.
